"In each of our three care homes in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, we are dedicated to providing you with a true home environment, even if you require highly dependent dementia care."

Choosing the right care home

Choosing the right residential care home for you, a parent, sibling or other family member can seem like a daunting prospect. Especially when, in the case of dementia or other specialist care, you might feel you are being asked to make that decision quickly or unexpectedly.

For people with dementia or other specialist care needs, funding is often provided at local authority level and a social worker may suggest a range of residential care homes with facilities and skilled staff to accommodate complex needs. In most cases however you can still decide to choose any suitable care home in the local authority area and still receive the funding. This means that you can choose the most suitable home that meets your needs, or the needs of your family member.

There are a number of important considerations to make when choosing residential care homes, including:

  •  Will it provide the right level of personal care?
  •  Will it provide the right environment to make the individual feel happy and at ease?
  •  Will you ensure that all family members are consulted about this important decision?
  •  Will the home still provide the person with links to their local community or network?
  •  Will the person be able to bring personal items and furniture to make their room feel more like home?
  •  Will the funding of the care be affordable in the long term, whether from local social services or other sources

At St Andrew’s Care Homes, our senior management team has over 20 years experience in helping families make these decisions and understand their rights and choices. We are more than happy to talk through any issues or questions you have, so feel free to contact us.
