"In each of our three care homes in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, we are dedicated to providing you with a true home environment, even if you require highly dependent dementia care."

Our Residents

St Andrew’s Care Homes was set up to specialise in providing person-centred care for individuals living with dementia. Following a diagnosis of dementia, people can feel vulnerable and in need of reassurance and support. Our staff work together with our residents’ families to do everything we can to make sure our residents retain their sense of identity and feeling of self-worth. As we specialise in dementia care we can recognise that unusual, confusing or difficult behaviour to deal with can be a way in which the resident is trying to communicate because they find it difficult to express themselves in words.

What is dementia?

Dementia is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by certain diseases or conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion, changes in personality or behaviour and problems with speech and understanding.

Is there a cure for dementia?

At present, no. All types of dementia are progressive which means that the structure and chemistry of the brain become increasingly damaged over time. This means that the individual’s ability to remember, understand, communicate and reason gradually declines. How quickly the dementia progresses is determined by the type of dementia and the individual it is affecting.

Does a dementia diagnosis automatically mean a care home?

No. Many people with dementia remain at home and are cared for by loved ones. This is of course not an easy task but there are many organisations able to provide support to carers, both financially and practically. Home care is not always possible depending on individual circumstances. In such cases, a residential home specialising in person-centred dementia care could be appropriate.

At St Andrew’s Care Homes, our senior management team has over 20 years experience in helping families make the most appropriate care decisions for their loved ones when diagnosed with dementia. We are more than happy to talk through any issues or questions you have, so feel free to contact us.
